Prez Mahama Orders Probe Into Sole-Source Contracts
President John Dramani Mahama has stepped in following an explosive media investigation into how contracts are being awarded under the government’s flagship Big Push infrastructure programme.
At a high-level meeting with Civil Society Organisations at the Jubilee House, the President acknowledged the growing public concern sparked by the Fourth Estate exposé, revealing that his office has already begun moves to obtain the full report for a thorough review. While only portions of the investigation have so far been seen by the Presidency, Mahama made it clear that the allegations will not be taken lightly.
“Although we have seen snippets of the investigation from the media, I have instructed my office to obtain the full detailed report from the Fourth Estate and to conduct a study of the various allegations,” he stated.
The President was quick to clarify that sole sourcing of contracts is not illegal under the country’s procurement laws, stressing that it is permitted under specific conditions. However, he underscored the importance of transparency, noting that open competitive tendering remains the best way to guarantee value for money and public trust.
The Big Push programme-one of the government’s most ambitious infrastructure drives-has been under intense public scrutiny in recent days, with civil society groups and development partners closely monitoring how the administration responds to the unfolding controversy. Mahama assured stakeholders that any action taken will be guided by both the full findings of the Fourth Estate investigation and an official response from the Ministry of Roads and Highways.
